Who Are You?
Name: Whim
Age: 17

Contact Information: AIM: dolecup, GoogleTalk: my.k4rm4
Timezone: PST!

Who is Your Character?
Full Name: Florean Felicius Fortescue
Nicknames: Flore, Flo. Generally just goes by Florean, though.
Age/Birthday: 18 / 1 May, 1961.
House and Years Attended: Ravenclaw / 1972-1979
Blood Status: Pureblood.
Occupation: Pureblood heir, and, therefore, absolutely nothing. He's debating getting a job.
Alliance: Neutral; his family has heavy ties to Death Eaters. He prefers to remain detached from the "problem," as he calls it.
Boggart: Someone telling him he failed.
Patronus: Snow Rabbit; he cast the spell for the first time in 6th year.

Personality: Born into a wealthy, Pureblooded family, Florean's personality is dictated by his strengths, not his weaknesses: it's a talent, he supposes, being able to hide one's weaknesses from the rest of the world that almost every Pureblood child learns when they're young. His personality has also been influenced by his family and his upbringing: no Pureblooded child can come out of their home without being severely influenced by Pureblood ideals and mannerisms. Needless to say, at first meeting Florean appears every bit the Pureblood heir he is: haughty, holier-than-thou, reserved, condescending, impersonal. He carries himself with a practiced grace that only aristocrats manage after hours of proper etiquette training. His voice is soft, and carries an undertone that seems to demean the listener, no matter who he's talking to; unless it's someone of higher class, in which case his training sets in and he's so polite it almost hurts.

Preferring to read and study to outdoor leisure, Florean is the quintessential Ravenclaw bookworm. Practical and pragmatic, he has a dedicated work ethic and believes that learning is the key to unlocking a person's true potential in life. Because of this belief, Florean spent all too much time locked away in the Ravenclaw Commons or Dormitory, reading and tuning out the rest of the world--much to the chagrin of some of his housemates. He isn't the easiest person to befriend and often chooses to read or study over being social. For all of his anti-social behavior, though, he has a tendency to attract others because of his sharp wit and quick sense of humor. Although often masked under layers of false politeness and bookishness, Florean has as much of a sense of humor as any teenage boy: it's just a bit, you know, smarter.

Florean is calm, mature, and responsible, and although he prefers to be a follower as opposed to a leader, he can hold his own when push comes to shove. He's very organized, keeping detailed notes for every class and lesson in notebooks (that he gets his mum to shrink, so he can carry them to and from school). He prefers diplomacy to fighting, and enjoys a good debate. He's a good listener, although his advice generally comes from what he knows from History-- his favorite subject and class-- and thus isn't always applicable in day to day life. However, he does try to play the good peer to his schoolmates, and can often be seen calming down various younger students. Although he's introverted, and has relationship problems, he's surprisingly good with people, and is known to be a good tutor as well.

Despite his best efforts, however, Florean is not without his faults. His inability to make connections with other people is one of his most crippling: good connections pay off as a person grows up, and Florean can't seem to break his introverted nature. Although many people are drawn to his calm nature, he can't bring himself to trust many people, and in the end he is left with next to no close friends. Although not truly judgmental, he makes small judgments about others that are typically not true--though he never tries to correct them by befriending a person. He has many problems interacting with people on any level other than base politeness, and his awkward, bookish nature works against him at social gatherings. However, by this time in his life he's beginning to grow out of his awkwardness and become a more trusting and social individual.

If there's one thing that Florean can't stand, it's failure. He's terrified of it. His fear is so great, in fact, that it practically dictates his life. Working himself often to the point of exhaustion, Florean refuses to settle, especially when it comes to school, and is often up until all hours of the night studying for classes. Although he's genuinely quite smart, he underestimates himself--or maybe he overestimates his classes--and can often be seen muttering to himself about information he's recently learned. He's also awful under pressure: it freaks him out, and his study habits do nothing to help this. When he's extremely stressed he has a tendency to snap at everyone and anyone who talks to him, regardless of what it is they're trying to say.

Florean is also very analytical, which is both a strength and a fault. He makes sure to completely understand a problem or situation before rushing into it head on. He can quickly assess variables in a given situation and respond accordingly as well. In a crisis, he is quick and efficient, and does not cave under the pressure (for once). However, his analytical nature also makes his response to a problem slow; he must first analyze the most efficient way to solve it before actually diving in. If he believes a situation to be too difficult, he will back away from it instead of charging into it, wand blazing. If there's one thing he believes fully, it's that a person can learn the most from the past, and because of this his analysis is generally done with historical events and actions in mind. As stated, this is probably one of his greatest strengths, as well as his greatest weakness.

Family and Friends:
Father: Felicius Fortescue II, Slytherin alumnus (1937-44). Pureblood. 11 June, 1926. Works for the Ministry; suspected Death Eater. Is known to be secretive about his personal life. Misogynistic and opportunistic. Has high hopes for his only son.
Mother: Camelia Fortescue (née Crescentini), Slytherin alumna (1946-1953). Pureblood. 12 March, 1935. Homemaker. Intuitively smart, but plays into Pureblood elitism. Sees her place as being "in the home." Parents are Italian immigrants.
Sister: Feliciana Fortescue, Gryffindor alumna (1970-1977). 30 January, 1959. Works for the Ministry; aligned with the Order. Goes by the nickname "Ana." Has been disowned by her parents. Believes that everyone should be equal. Is in constant contact with Florean.

Appearance: If there is any word to describe Florean, it's "aristocratic." Soft features, high cheekbones, and pale skin, he has the look of someone who has been pampered all his life, and probably spends next to no time outside. His hair is dark, always impeccably cut, and his face is always clean shaved (in fact, he almost looks as though he's never had to shave a day in his life). His eyes are a light blue, and stand out from behind dark eyelashes. He's only slightly taller than average, and thin, his only muscles coming from the walking he does around London and Diagon Alley; overall, he prefers the company of books to playing sports (especially Quidditch; flying terrifies him).

Clothing wise, everything he wears is impeccably tailored, and often imported from Italy on his mother's request (she claims Italy is the only place one can find perfect fashion). Nothing he wears is extravagant in the least, as he prefers to stay out of the limelight, but it's always very nice and proper: it practically screams high society. On his wrist is a wizarding watch he got from his mother for his 16th birthday. It tells the time. He also carries with him a silver pocket watch he inherited from his father, which lets the owner know where everyone in their family is at a given time (as long as the location isn't protected by wards).
PB: Tom Sturridge

Sexuality: Unexplored. He refuses to engage in romantic relations because no matter what happens he assumes he'll be thrown into an arranged marriage, and would prefer to abstain from heartbreak. Some people have guessed him to be homosexual, due to his lack of interest in women, but whether or not he's interested in men or not interested in anyone is still unknown.

Achievements: Prefect at Hogwarts. Cast a Patronus 6th year. Passed Apparition test on his first try.

Biography: In the early summer of 1926, Felicius Fortescue II was born into a wealthy, Pureblooded family: the only child and son of the Fortescues. He was a rough child, very manipulative, and exactly the type of child his father had hoped for. With familial ties to nearly all the Pureblood families of England by this time, the Fortescues had made a name for themselves within the Ministry and Hogwarts: a few generations back Dexter Fortescue had been Headmaster. Felicius was raised as all Pureblood children are, with impeccable education before entering Hogwarts and the ingrained ideals, values, and morals that come with old money--and old blood. He was sorted into Slytherin as everyone had assumed he would, and graduated near the top of his class. He was smart, rich, and from an influential family, so it was no surprise when he entered work at the Ministry shortly after leaving school.

Camelia Crescentini, born in England to two Italian parents, was born in 1935, into just as old blood as her future husband. The Crescentini family, well known in Italy, moved to England for Mr. Crescentini's job as a liaison between the British Ministry and Italian Ministry. Camelia was the youngest child of 7, pampered to a fault, and grew up in a world of luxury. Trained from a young age to be the ideal Pureblood woman, she learned etiquette, the arts, Italian, and literature as a young child, as well as studying over breaks during her schooling years. Upon graduation her engagement to Felicius Fortescue was announced: an engagement that had been decided upon only a few years after her birth. Although she was much younger than her husband, Camelia played the role of wife perfectly.

The family did not grow in size immediately. Deciding to wait until his position in the ministry rose, it was five years into their marriage that Felicius decided it was time to make an heir to the Fortescue fortune: a year later, their first child, Feliciana, was born. She was loud and wild and nothing at all the type of child a Pureblood girl should be. Thus, she was charged into the keep of various nannies, all of whom she inevitably scared off, while Felicius once again required the help of his increasingly distant wife to create the perfect Pureblood baby boy who would inherit his fortune and personality.

Born three years after his sister, Florean was just the type of child his father had hoped for. Quiet and detached, Florean grew up in the care of his mother, instead of nannies, being taught everything that a Pureblood boy should know and more, although he often preferred to listen to the extravagant stories his sister made up when no one was listening. Constantly reading some book, his intellect was quickly recognized by his parents and he was thrown into the tutelage of various Pureblood teachers at a young age, so by the time he entered Hogwarts, Florean had a fair grasp on subjects studied by Muggle middle-schoolers: with a decidedly Pureblood twist to them, of course.

Upon first entering Hogwarts, Florean was sorted immediately into Ravenclaw. His intelligence and sharp wit made him a perfect match to the house, and, although his father was disappointed that Florean was not a Slytherin, he was more proud of him than Ana, who had been sorted into Gryffindor three years prior. At the age of 11, Florean still held fast to Pureblood beliefs: elitist and harsh, he made very few friends and copious amounts of enemies (or perhaps un-friends would be a better term, as he was never mean enough to get what one could really call enemies). He remained at the top of his class throughout the years, and, slowly, gradually, began to grow out of the Pureblood beliefs. Although he puts on quite a show when he's among other Purebloods, by this point in his life he's not quite elitist anymore and remains in contact with his sister, who dispensed of those beliefs long ago. Upon her graduation from Hogwarts, Ana had been disowned by the Fortescues because of conflicting beliefs, and, although told specifically not to keep in touch, Florean remains close with his sister.

The years at Hogwarts were surprisingly smooth for Florean, despite his lack of close friends. He had enough acquaintances to get by, and years of mingling with the other Pureblood elite had left him with many "friends" among the houses. I use friends lightly, as they were more of "people that understand his life" than real friends. Florean excelled in school, often at the top of his class. He abstained from Quidditch, and often only attended the final game of the year, simply because the sport didn't interest him. By fifth year, Florean began to (silently and slowly) break away from his families ideals, and being placed in the position of Prefect had truly changed his outlook on people as a whole.

He graduated Hogwarts at the top of his class, and forced his parents to foot the bill on a rather cushy flat in London while he sorted out his life.
